What is Naturopathic Medicine?
Naturopathic medicine is the art and science of diagnosis, treatment and preveintion of desase using
natural therapies. It addresses the underlying causes of disease, rather than simply suppressing symptoms.
Focusing on prevention and using non-toxic substances along with non-invasive treatments, naturopathic doctors
support and stimulate the body's inherent ability to heal itself. The patient is seen as a whole person - not
as a condition - and the physical, mental and emotional dimensions are taken into account in developing a
personal treatment plan. Patient education combined with individualized care result in comprehensive approach
to health and well-being.

Dr. Lisa McNiven, B.Sc., N.D.
I am pleased to tell you that I was raised in Pictou County and I knew that I would return to the
area to set up my practice.
After graduating from East Pictou High School I decided to venture over
to the Nova Scotia Agricultural College in Truro. Initially, my intentions were to become a
veterinarian however that idea eventually changed. I graduated with an Animal Science Degree and
decided to do animal research at the college for a year.
After much contemplation I decided to go
into nursing as I knew that the health field was my future. I graduated from the Aberdeen School
of Nursing in 1995 and then I went on to work as a Registered Nurse for the next seven years.
Within those years I applied to The Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine in Toronto and
started a four year program. I then graduated in 2001. That year marked a very special moment
in my life. I decided to start a practice here in the County.
